Eating the bowl

Why bother with the food when the container is bright, cool and has tasty chewable bits at the bottom?

Kerian loves to suck on his bowl but once he did realise there was food in there, he did give each piece a fair go. Papa cut the food this time and instead of a large cherry tom, Kerian got a half tomato with a precut handle: how convenient! The cucumber was successful again. Kerian seems to delight in the noise his gums make against the skin. The carrot is hard because raw but if we prop it up on the table it's fun to grab. Note the fancy cut outs to make it easy to handle. Despite what kerian's marraine thought, this is exclusively for ease of handling and not aesthetics! I'll try to post some photos of the food the way we cut it to show it a bit better. The batavia leaf had less success but to be fair, it was a bit wilted and boring.

Kerian mastered a new talent on saturday: he can now sit unaided for quite a while. He catches himself when out of balance and uses our hands as levers to prop himself back up when needed. This has come very handy in the high chair. Baby K seems to be able to stay for much longer before he gets frustrated.

Bananas are fun to suck on!

Babanas are messy especially if they are ripe. They also are very pale and never really roused interest in Kerian unless he pulled some to his mouth from our hands. But on December 19th, that changed.
This is my absolute favourite: pure, raw faces from tasting new foods! A chunk made its way in his mouth, which he of course spat out in due course but I did find some banana glob with its fibres in a poo this morning. Kerian is an EC'd baby so it's very easy to see what comes out of his guts. Although he's still too little to process he seems to have no problems with bits of food travelling along his digestive tube.

A leaf

Kerian is still ill but he was in a great mood around lunch time and we were both home so he sat with us. We had a salad with veggie burgers and Kerian had his usual plus one batavia leaf. He did not even look at the rest. He brandished the bowl before I could lay the food before him and immediately went for the leaf! From one hand to the other and a good exploration with the tongue. I think he liked the coolness and the water on it. The texture was very different and it was very easy to grasp. Salad will definitely be on the menu again!

Cool as a cucumber

This WE, we gave Kerian a cucumber. I thought he would destroy it but he is rather delicate. I don't think he likes the taste 'cause he made faces again today when I gave him a piece. But judge for yourself: Kerian grimacing through the discovery but still giving it a go. Note the tongue exploring the skin and flesh. Kerian does this with the cold air outside as well and definitely on anything new. He's quite precise with this move.

Hello!

Well, we have to start somewhere and that somewhere is a lovely background and really ill positioned text and photos! Anyway...Baby Kerian is ill today but I am going to start posting.

Kerian started sitting with us on his latch on Chicco chair a couple weeks ago, including at the restaurant and has been watching all the eating activity with growing interest.

So five days ago, at lunch time, I decided to hand him a tomato, a slice of red pepper, a carrot, an apple slice and a bit of banana. He's been playing with food at almost every meal since then.

What is BLW

Baby Led Weaning is simply a very old way to wean a baby by letting this instinctive little individual make his own choices in what and how much is eaten. It bypasses the puree stage entirely and starts around 6 months (the finger food age in conventional weaning). Nothing is force or spoon fed. Baby grabs the food, explores colours, textures and tastes as they come. The food is the same as eaten by the family. Runny foods are offered with dippers or on pre loaded spoons and baby learns in time to dip or eat with cutlery. Babies are very good at knowing what they need and BLW gives them a chance to do exactly what they need to do, allows them to develop great coordination skills and gives them the independence they so love.

What is EC?

EC or Natural Infant Hygiene stands for Elimination Communication. Although Kerian wears nappies, especially since it's been cold. He has used a potty since he was a few weeks old. Babies are born with full sphincter muscle control and - as you'll know if you have one - the ability to communicate. This is all one needs to let baby pee and poo in other places than against this skin. Kerian has never had a nappy rash and he pooed in his nappy maybe a dozen times since he was born. This obviously is not new but is the standard method in most of the world: indeed a lot of mummies simply cannot buy nappies or wash them on our planet!

Massaging your baby

Infant massage is used in many places in the world and is gaining popularity again in our 'civilised' regions! Most mummies and daddies touch their babies and stroke them with love and that's just what massage is all about. I Personally started with a free massage video on Video Jug and moved on to a full massage routine from Vimala McLure's book. Kerian's favourite is face and legs. This is a great prep for baby gymnastic or baby yoga.

Baby Yoga

We all do a bicycle movement with our little one and we lift them up in the air to delight them. Why not take this a step further and organise this fun time into a baby yoga routine? Francoise Barbira Freedman wrote a great book about it. I practiced yoga for years and during pregnancy and then I got lazy. This is a great way to get back into it. Not only you'll be amazed at what your baby can do on his/her own with some gentle support but you get back in shape too. Kerian loves drops, flying sequences and any leg exercise.
